Tips and Tricks on Finding Low Price Airfare

If you're looking for an airline ticket for your next vacation, family visit, or business meeting, you'll know that finding the lowest-cost airfare isn't easy.
Part of what makes the cost comparison game so difficult is that there is such a vast range of fares for a given itinerary.

Fortunately, there are some simple tips and tricks you can use to cut down on the time and energy you spend looking for the best ticket, so that you can relax and enjoy traveling.

  1. Make the rounds: nobody ever found the  best fare by looking at one internet site. So "make the rounds". Pick four airlines you like and that fly to the location you'll be going to. Check their websites and jot down the best prices you find. Then move on to three or four fare finder sites such as Orbitz or Travelocity, and check the same itinerary. Finally, call three or four travel agencies and see if they can beat these prices. Be methodical, and don't waste endless time checking every site or travel agency. Just look at a few of each type, and you will be able to find a reasonable fare.
  2. Be flexible: flexibility is the number 1 way to save money on airfares. Don't just check one date – check three or four. See if there are additional airports near your destination and take a look at their fares. You'll be surprised at the huge variations in price you will see from one airport to the next. Sometimes, smaller, regional airports tend to attract more low-cost, budget airports, and charge smaller gate fees.
  3. Know the best times to fly: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday are the best days to fly. Since so many people fly out shortly before the weekend (i.e., Friday night) and fly back at the end of the weekend (Sunday night), the best flight prices are to be found if you avoid these days. In addition, you will find that flying in the afternoon or evening, or especially later at night, can save you some money.
  4. Look for consolidation fares: consolidation fares are the seats that airlines are not able to sell themselves. Shortly before the flight date, they often sell these seats to a consolidator. Consolidation fares offer the exact same seats at a steep discount. The only catch to worry about is that you will need to purchase them at the last minute.
