I usually search well in advance and search often. I'll search every day to make sure I'm getting the best deal. One of the annoying things about searching for
fares on the internet is that it's sometimes difficult to tell the specifications of a promotional fare.

I recently lost out on getting a great promotional flight that I had been looking at because I didn't understand that the purchase window was about to close. The airline website had the fare listed under "internet special" and the only apparent specification was an advance purchase of more than two weeks. The actual promotion also specified that you had to purchase within a specific two week window. That's fair enough, but I was disappointed at the last minute (I had been searching around to see if I could do even better), and I ended up scrambling to find a decent deal at the very last minute. I did find another deal, but it involved flying out of a less convenient airport.

If you're flying internationally it's definitely worth it to shop around a lot on the web to make sure you're getting a good deal. You'll find the best deals by traveling off peak seasons. Perhaps that would be in November or February. It's
hard to predict the fare trends though. Some of the airline prices are so complex that I've even seen airline pricing executives stumbling when trying to explain them. If your flight involves layovers, you can frequently cobble together a cheaper flight deal by piecing together flights from different airlines.
