Cheap Air Line Tickets
|
|
It can be complicated to find the cheapest airline
tickets, but if
search early and search often you'll probably come up with a good
deal. It's a good idea to search on
travelocity.com,
orbitz.com, and
priceline.com, but once you've found a deal it sometimes pays off to
search for the same flight on the airline's own website. I've gotten a
better deal a number of times that way. That also helps you avoid the
extra change fees that those clearinghouse websites sometimes impose
on your tickets.

That's why I really like the aggregate search engine
websites like
kayak.com. These kinds of sites search the prices of the same flight
in many different venues and then show you the range. You have to figure
out what are the blind spots of each search engine though. Kayak.com for
example doesn't include all the budget airlines in their searches, so I
always search them separately.
The more you search for flights, the more you'll learn
the ins and outs of each
airline. It's important to understand that each airline has a hub city.
That can help you figure out which airport to choose for which
destination. You'll be able to find much better deals much more of the
time if you're able to depart from different airports in the area. For
example, if you're not able to find the greatest fare flying out of
Richmond in Virginia, you might have better luck departing from
Norfolk, D.C., or even Charlottesville. Sometimes the savings are
enormous enough to really be worth it, but you have to figure out for
yourself whether it's really worth it to make a drive of a certain
distance to get a certain fare.
You also have to figure out how much of a factor you
consider a long layover to be. Sometimes you can save a lot by accepting
a 4 or 5 hour stopover, but you might not consider that sacrifice
worthwhile, especially if your trip is very short!
